Amazon's AI Price Tracker Now Shows 12 Months of Data
Amazon has quietly expanded its built-in price history feature to display a full year of pricing data for millions of products, the company confirmed today. The tool, accessible via the Amazon app's "Price history" button or by asking the AI assistant Rufus, previously only showed a limited window of fluctuations.

The update arrives just weeks before Amazon’s annual Prime Day sale, a period already under legal fire. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, in a price-fixing lawsuit filed last month, alleged Amazon forces sellers to raise prices at competing retailers before its flagship event.
How the Feature Works
Users can now swipe through a 12-month chart of price changes, including the highest and lowest prices recorded. The data refreshes daily and is embedded in product pages across the app.
"This gives shoppers unprecedented transparency on whether a listed price is a genuine deal or a marketing tactic," said e-commerce analyst Priya Mehta, founder of Retail Insight Group. "But it also raises questions about how Amazon uses this data to influence pricing strategies."
Background
Amazon has long faced accusations of anticompetitive behavior related to pricing. The California lawsuit, filed in late September, accuses the retailer of "bullying vendors" to maintain artificially high prices on other platforms, particularly around Prime Day.
Bonta’s complaint cites internal documents showing Amazon employees pressuring sellers to match or exceed Amazon’s prices elsewhere. The expanded price history feature, while consumer-friendly, comes as regulators scrutinize the company’s dominance.
Rufus AI Integration
The AI assistant Rufus, launched earlier this year, can now voice price history queries. Asking "Show me the price trend for this blender" pulls up the full-year chart. Amazon says the move is part of a broader push to make shopping "more transparent" via generative AI.
What This Means
For consumers, the longer view allows smarter buying decisions—especially before Prime Day, when flash discounts may hide inflated baseline prices. "If you see a product hovered at $50 for months and then drops to $40 for Prime Day, that's a real 20% saving," explained consumer advocate Lisa Tran, director of ShopSmart. "But if it was $30 three months ago, the deal is hollow."

For sellers, the feature increases pressure to maintain consistent pricing. Some might reduce price volatility to avoid alarming shoppers. "Amazon is arming buyers with data that could erode margins for small businesses," warned John Keller, a pricing consultant at MarketEdge. "It’s a double-edged sword."
Legal Implications
Legal experts say the timing of the expansion could backfire. "Granting users more transparency now might be seen as an attempt to deflect antitrust accusations," said Sarah Chen, a professor of competition law at Georgetown University. "But it also provides regulators with more evidence of how Amazon's platform controls pricing dynamics."
The lawsuit specifically mentions Prime Day as a period where Amazon allegedly coerced sellers. By exposing a full year of data, the company may inadvertently corroborate claims of price manipulation.
Next Steps
Amazon has not commented directly on the lawsuit, but a spokesperson said the price history upgrade is "part of our ongoing investment in helping customers shop with confidence." The feature rolls out globally over the next week.
Analysts expect the California case to move to discovery by early next year. Meanwhile, Prime Day ads are already flooding the app, with countdown banners that now let shoppers compare historical prices with a single tap.
